The Great Sioux War of 1876-77 is memorable to most Americans because of Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer's last stand at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Yet despite its infamy, it was only one engagement of many in the protracted, disjointed struggle between the US Army and the allied Sioux and Northern Cheyenne Indians. "Battles and Skirmishes of the Great Sioux War, 1876-77" presents the military side of the struggle and offers 15 accounts, with maps, of the many engagements as they were observed by participating officers, enlisted men, scouts, surgeons and newspaper correspondents.

Author Biography:

Jerome A. Greene is retired as Research Historian for the National Park Service. He is the author of numerous books, including Stricken Field: The Little Bighorn since 1876, Battles and Skirmishes of the Great Sioux War, 1876-1877: The Military View; Lakota and Cheyenne: Indian Views of the Great Sioux War, 1876-1877; and Morning Star Dawn: The Powder River Expedition and the Northern Cheyennes, 1876, all published by the University of Oklahoma Press.
