Description

Houston, there is a problem. The supply of oil from Texas, Oklahoma, and Alaska will not be enough to meet America's energy needs. With countries like China and India growing rapidly, oil supplies are becoming increasingly scarce. More oil is needed to produce more pollution and higher prices. Most likely, you're already feeling the pinch at your pump. What's the solution to this problem? A number of new technologies were developed to reduce pollution and combat rising gas prices. Fuel cell vehicles are powered by hydrogen and emit water vapor. Biofuel vehicles use fuel made from plant materials. Hybrid vehicles run on rechargeable batteries. They can also be powered by a gasoline engine or another power source. Gas/electric hybrids such as the Toyota Prius are probably familiar to you. Although gas/electric hybrids have a lot of popularity and can increase fuel economy while reducing pollution, they are not perfect. We'll discuss their weaknesses on the next page. A hybrid alternative has been proposed and tested by a variety of businesses as well as the Environmental Protection Agency, (EPA). It is hydraulic hybrids. Hydraulic hybrids follow many of the same principles and are lighter than electric hybrids. However, instead of heavy, polluting batteries, they use light components and fluid to power the vehicle at low speeds. Does it sound too good to be true? Continue reading to find out how hydraulic hybrids work and how they compare with electric hybrids.
