Description

This book presents the proceedings of the IVth Azores International Advanced School in Space Sciences entitled "Asteroseismology and Exoplanets: Listening to the Stars and Searching for New Worlds". The school addressed the topics at the forefront of scientific research being conducted in the fields of asteroseismology and exoplanetary science, two fields of modern astrophysics that share many synergies and resources. These proceedings comprise the contributions from 18 invited lecturers, including both monographic presentations and a number of hands-on tutorials.

Author Biography:

Tiago L. Campante is a Research Scientist at the University of Göttingen (Germany). His main research interests are focused on asteroseismology and exoplanetary science. He devotes most of his time to the asteroseismic investigation of solar-type stars and red giants, having developed a special interest in the characterization of exoplanet-host stars. Dr. Campante has been an active contributor to the asteroseismic program of the NASA Kepler mission, having also previously contributed to the analysis of seismic targets observed by the CoRoT space mission and during ground-based, radial-velocity campaigns. He is currently engaged in the stellar science preparation work for the upcoming NASA’s TESS and ESA’s PLATO missions. Mário J. P. F. G. Monteiro current research interests focus on the study of the internal structure of solar-type stars using asteroseismology. These efforts cover convection and convective overshooting in other stars as well as in the Sun, and theseismic determination of stellar parameters for the study of stellar evolution from the pre-main sequence up to the more advanced stages of evolution. He is an Associate Professor at the Universidade do Porto, Coordinator of the FCT Doctoral Network for Space Sciences (PhD::SPACE) and the Portuguese Delegate do the Science Programme Committee at ESA. Nuno C. Santos is researcher at the Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço and professor at the Departamento de Física e Astronomia of the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto. His main research interests include the search for Extrasolar planets using radial-velocity and transit techniques, the study of the statistical properties of extrasolar planets and their host stars, and the use of high resolution stellar spectroscopy for the determination of stellar atmospheric parameters and abundances in solar-type stars. He the national Co-PI of the ESPRESSO project for a new high resolution ultra-stable spectrograph for theVLT, and board member of the CHEOPS and PLATO (ESA) missions.
