A mid-level bank employee in Palestine, Muna daily has to negotiate military checkpoints just to get to work. When she is advised that she has received a Green Card to live in the US, she realizes she can give herself and her son Fadi a future beyond what they could expect in Palestine.
Arriving in small-town Illinois, they bunk in with Muna’s sister, Raghda (Hiam Abbass, The Visitor, The Lemon Tree) and her family. Fadi promptly starts at the local high school with his cousin Salma (Arrested Development’s Alia Shawkat), while Muna sets out to get some banking work, but they both find that people of Middle Eastern descent aren’t as warmly welcomed as they'd hoped. After a string of knockbacks, Muna takes the first job she’s offered… flipping burgers at White Castle.
Amreeka is heartwarming comedy about new beginnings-about fitting in and getting on-and making the most of your life.
