This work has been designed to try to shock adults into realizing that the world of contemporary American infants and young children is saturated with inappropriate images of Indians. Infants and young children internalize distorted images they learn about American Indians not only during the twin peaks of Columbus Day and Thanksgiving, but also at seasonal sporting events, when players and fans don ersatz headdresses and sacrilegious paint to act out their version of "braves" and "chiefs". This second edition incorporates writings and developments since the first edition, such as a chronology which documents changes associated with the mascot issue. It includes an essay by Dr Cornell Pewewardy on Disney's Pocahontas film. Other new material incorporates powerful commentary by Native American veterans, who speak to the issue of stereotyping against their people in the military. Also featured is an essay on Thanksgiving, authored by the late Kathy Kerner.

Author Biography:

Arlene Hirschfelder is the author of award-winning nonfiction books as well as curricula, magazine articles, and bibliographies concerning Native Americans. Paulette Fairbanks Molin is a member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe from the White Earth Reservation. She is a faculty member at Hampton University in Virginia. Yvonne Wakim, Cherokee/Arab, is a board member of Nitchen, Inc. (Our Children in the Lenni Lenape language). She helped create the Family Awareness Network, a holistic preventative mental health program for American Indian youth and their families.
