Allegro Non Troppo presents six animated sequences in riotous colour set to classical music. It maintains throughout an outstanding level of imagination, humour and technical excellence. As in Fantasia, the animation is linked together with live action scenes...but instead of Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra, Allegro Non Troppo features a Felliniesque of old women directed by a mad, boorish conductor and a harassed animator (played by Maurizio Nichetti).
"I have an idea! I have an idea!" shouts the exultant director,
"The music of the great classical composers set to wonderful animation!
"What d'you mean its been done?!?
Who?
Prisney?!?
Who is this Prisney?!?"
So begins one of modern cinema's true curios. Disney's 'Fantasia' is of course the stuff of cinema legend - the exquisitely detailed, magical, spellbinding animated cartoon spectacular that became a benchmark in entertainment, seen by generations of children and adults alike over decades.
Allegro Non Troppo could be said to continue where Fantasia left off - if you were on the right drugs. In Allegro Non Troppo, the world is upside down, inside out - in fact its completely concave; surrealistic adventures have never been quite so much fun! Allegro Non Troppo is more than just a parody; it's a beautiful and delightful film experience in its own right, and has a deserved reputation as landmark in animation.
Set to some of the most wonderous and emotive classical music ever composed. Allegro Non Troppo presents six animated sequences in wonderous colour - all animated from original drawings and cells, long before the age of computer animation and detailed automated design.
Linked together by hilarious live action sequences of a geriatric orchestra being put through their paces by a humourless and iron willed conductor, Allegro Non Troppo charms the viewer through its outstandingly imaginative animation, humour and technical excellence.
