Description

John Cowan is headkeeper on a large Scottish estate, and has worked as a gamekeeper all his life. In this new book, he passes on everything he knows about the profession he loves. The book is crammed with fascinating practical advice ? but it is also a very entertaining read for anyone interested in the day-to-day challenges and joys of running a busy sporting estate. It can be read for its countless tips and gamekeeping wisdom, or simply for pleasure, for the unique insight into the hard-working but rewarding life of the modern gamekeeper. With informative drawings of traps and snares by Roger Penwill and classic wildlife illustrations from C.F. Tunnicliffe.

Author Biography:

John Cowan was born in the Scottish Borders and spent his early years exploring the surrounding countryside and learning about its wildlife, trying to glean as much knowledge as possible from the old countrymen and their working dogs. His first job was under the watchful eye of the famous keeper, Ronnie Rose, at Eskdalemuir, where he learnt about deer stalking, grouse, blackcock, duck and pheasant shooting. Each role required the services of a different breed of working dog. He then took employment at the Duke of Roxburgh's estate near Kelso, learning about grouse and wild partridge management under Jimmy Nairn. John has been a gamekeeper in Scotland for over 40 years, much of it as a head keeper managing pheasant and partridge shooting and roe deer stalking. He and his wife Jan have two children and two grandchildren. Roger Penwill is the founder of the Shrewsbury Cartoon Festival and co-founder of the Professional Cartoonists Organisation. He is a past President of the International Federation of Cartoonists Organisations and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is married with a daughter and son and lives in the village of Brimfield in north Herefordshire. You can visit Roger's website at www.penwill.com
