Although Darwin identified inherited variation as the creative force in evolution - the raw source for the origin of new species - he never figured out where it comes from. His successors, known as neo-Darwinists, thought they had discovered the answer when they merged evolutionary theory with modern genetics: new species arise from the gradual accumulation of random mutations of DNA. Author Biography:

Lynn Margulis is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a recipient of the 1999 Presidential Medal of Science. She is also Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Geosciences, University of Massachusetts. Dorion Sagan is the author of Biospheres and, with Dr. Eric Schneider, Into the Cool: The New Thermodynamics of Life.
