Description

A book from another time... Before she was a co-founder of the ACLU Transsexual Rights Committee, before she was a successful Silicon Valley entrepreneur, before she was CEO of a multi-national high tech corporation, she was a homeless teenager, disowned by family, a throw-away street tranny. A Life in Transition is transsexual activist and author, Kay Brown's personal memoir of her early life, holding nothing back. In it we see what it was really like to experience social and medical transition as a teenager in high school in the mid 1970s. It documents that transkids did exist long before our current age of controversy and angst about transsexual children and teens. It chronicles both those that helped her and those that tried hard to thwart her search for a "good enough life". The book adds depth and context to her two other books in the Understanding Transsexuality series, On the Science of Changing Sex and Rainbow's End. Raves for A Life in Transition: I was given the opportunity to read a pre-release of Kay Brown's memoir: A Life in Transition. It is a beautifully written and moving piece of work, that had me laughing at moments and almost crying at others. I can not recommend it enough. At 100 or so pages, it is a brisk refreshing read. I've always enjoyed Kay's writing style. It has a wonderful flow from sentence to sentence, paragraph to paragraph. This work chronicles her early life up until just after finishing medical transition. A deep look into the childhood, adolescence and young adulthood of an amazing transwoman. Intimate in everything to last detail. I won't lie, there are dark experiences captured in this memoir. Yet in the end, Kay never let's this define herself or her life's story. Every dark moment, every struggle, every obstacle is explored and overcome. Filled with bleak experiences that are downright tragic at times. In the end, it never feels draining or hopeless. This memoir is a statement of triumph. I can not thank Kay Brown enough for letting me read this early copy. It is an amazing read I would recommend to anyone interested in a look into the struggles of a transwoman's early life." -- Erin Gratzy
