Author Biography:

Sara Hawks Sterling was born March 4th, 1874 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to Dr. John Sterling and Mary Eldridge. She spent her life in the Philadelphia area working as an English teacher at various educational facilities. She authored several books in her lifetime and was considered an authority on Shakespeare. Largely forgotten today, she was an early female contributor to the Arthurian and Robin Hood canons. She died December 26th, 1936 of pneumonia, which she caught after directing a Christmas play for the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Clara Elsene Peck, born April 18, 1883, was an American illustrator, painter and commercial artist. Her works appeared in the Metropolitan Museum of Art traveling exhibition in 1956 and 1957. She was a member of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, National Association of Women Artists, the New York Watercolor society, and she was one of the first 20 women to be admitted to the Society of Illustrators. Peck did illustrations for Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, The Century Magazine, Proctor and Gamble, MetLife and others. Early in her career she did several book illustrations, which remain some of her best known work today.
