Presented in eight volumes, this title is illustrated with 200 plates. It includes a Preface by Frank Brangwyn. The volumes in this series comprise a general survey of the history of painting by looking at the dominant figures of the time and studying how art developed towards the end of the nineteenth century. Macfall writes in the foreword: In these pages I have simply written of the greater men of genius who have contributed to the art of painting; and I have touched upon their more famous works rather than attempted an exhaustive list of all their endeavour, the which has no value except to the dealer in antiques. The volumes are an attempt to place before the ordinary man the chief achievement of the years in the Art of Painting; and to hint at something of the real significance of that achievement. The contents of this volume are divided into the following groups: Venice; The Venetians; and The Splendid Garden of Art in the Venice of the Fifteen-Hundreds.
