Description

60 Years of the Loeb-Sourirajan Membrane: Principles, New Materials, Modelling, Characterization and Applications bring forth theoretical advances, novel characterization techniques, materials development, advanced treatment processes, and emerging applications of membrane-based technologies. The trigger for writing this book is the 2020, 60th anniversary of the first asymmetric polymeric membrane invented by Dr. Sidney Loeb and Dr. Srinivasa Sourirajan (University of California, Los Angeles, USA) on the breakthrough discovery of the semipermeable membrane for seawater desalination. The book places emphasis on the advances of organic and inorganic membranes in different fields, covering not only the primary application of membranes for water and wastewater treatment but also other applications dealing with energy conversion and storage, organic solvent purification, gas separation, and biomedical processes.

Author Biography:

Hui-Hsin Tseng is Professor of Occupational Safety and Health at the University of Chung Shan Medical University. She graduated in Chemical Engineering in 1997, and earned her M.S. in 2000 and Ph.D. in 2003 from Department of Environmental Engineering at National Chung Hsing University (NCHU). Recent research topics include development of the inorganic membranes and nanomaterials for hydrogen production/purification and carbon dioxide capture; design of the mixed-matrix membranes for vapor permeation, gas separation as well as oily wastewater treatment; and design of the antifouling membranes for metal recovery and water recycling from industrial effluents. She has authored or co-authored 84 technical articles, and three patents. Tseng was invited to serve as moderates or invited/keynote speakers in many international conferences including WFC12 in 2016, ISIM9 in 2018 and ICIM16 and WFC13 in 2021. Dr. Woei Jye Lau is currently an associate professor in the School of Chemical and Energy Engineering, at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Dr Lau has a very strong research interest in the field of membrane science and technology for water applications and has published >250 scientific papers with total number of Scopus citations exceeding 10,000. He is the author of the book Nanofiltration Membranes: Synthesis, Characterization and Applications published by CRC Press in 2017 and has edited several books published by CRC Press and Elsevier. Currently, Dr Lau serves as a subject editor for Chemical Engineering Research and Design (Elsevier) and is associate editor for Water Reuse (International Water Association). In recognition of his research excellence, Dr Lau received the Australian Endeavour Research Fellowship in 2015, UI-RESOLV Program 2016 (Indonesia), Mevlana International Exchange Program 2017/2018 (Turkey), Sakura Exchange Program 2018 (Japan), TÜBITAK’s Fellowships for Visiting Scientists 2018 (Turkey), ASEAN-India Collaborative R&D Scheme 2019 and the 6th Science & Technology Exchange Program (Iran). Mohammad A. Al-Ghouti is an associate professor in environmental chemistry at Qatar University. He obtained his PhD degree in environmental chemistry from the Queen’s University of Belfast, UK. He serves as undergraduate programs coordinator at the Biological and Environmental sciences. Dr. Al-Ghouti was successful in securing funding for 10 external competitive funds, six internal finds, and two industrial projects. Dr Al-Ghouti has supervised 14 MSc and 5 PhD students. The focus of Dr. Al-Ghouti’s research is to prepare and modify surface of adsorbents and membranes, study the adsorption mechanisms and study the remediation behaviour on various environmental compartments, including areas of environmental chemistry, membrane coating, membrane modification, controlling CaSO4 scaling and biofouling on reverse osmosis membrane, nanoparticles for water and wastewater treatment, multivariate, environmental remediation, waste minimization, and treatment. In total, he has authored or co-authored over 138 peer-reviewed research publications in environmental sciences and environmental sciences-related journals and over 55 research abstracts and posters. He has published two book chapters related to the field of environmental sciences. His current Google Scholar Citation h-index is 26; i10-index is 58. Dr. Liang An received his Bachelor degree in Thermal and Power Engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology and PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). After graduation, he worked as a visiting scholar and a postdoctoral fellow in the same research group. His research interests are in the area of clean energy-conversion technologies and renewable energy-storage technologies. His research interests include fuel cells and batteries.
