Description

Viewed by many as the next industrial revolution, 3D printing is gaining more and more attention. 3D printers are a new generation of machines that can make real, everyday tangible objects, from digital models - be it a small part of an aeroplane, a necklace, a pair of shoes, or a prosthetic that will transform someone's life. Also known as additive manufacturing, 3D printing challenges traditional manufacturing methods that require tools, factories, and shipping. It enables designers and engineers to create objects using software that is sent directly to a 3D printer. 3D Printing begins with an introduction that looks back at the beginnings of the technology, demystifying the software and explaining how the machines work and how 3D objects are printed. It also explains how 3D printing is being utilised by different industries and how hobbyists can engage with the technology. Divided by a number of themes such as fashion, art and gadgets, the introduction is followed by a catalogue of images that showcase the variety of objects being made across all industries and using different machines, from desktop printers now available in mainstream shops, to large-scale machines. The book finishes with a glimpse into the future as the possibilities of 3D printing are assessed.
