Purchased on Mighty Ape

Timeless masterpiece that should still be compulsory reading/viewing in our education system. Great looking movie with some of the most powerful actors in history. A brilliant piece of future history.

"The Dystopian classic" Purchased on Mighty Ape

Gripping and sinister. John Hurt the down trodden everyman is toyed with by Richard Burton (his last movie)…what is in room 101– Slower paced than the latest movies, it just means that when things do happen it is so much more intense…classic stuff here, you will return to watch this movie again and again.

Description

1984

A man loses his identity while living under a repressive regime. In a story based on George Orwell's classic novel, Winston Smith (John Hurt) is a government employee whose job involves the rewriting of history in a manner that casts his fictional country's leaders in a charitable light. His trysts with Julia (Suzanna Hamilton) provide his only measure of enjoyment, but lawmakers frown on the relationship – and in this closely monitored society, there is no escape from Big Brother.

Critic Reviews:

  • " Michael Radford's brilliant film of Orwell's vision does a good job of finding that line between the “future” world of 1984 and the grim postwar world in which Orwell wrote. " – Roger Ebert
  • " [A] well-intentioned (if overly stylised) adaptation… " – Leigh Paatsch
  • " Radford's visualization of Orwell's vision in 1984 is all the more powerful and disconcerting today for how frighteningly prescient it was " – James Kendrick
