I use this bag to transport my Asus G750J laptop – which is very wide. It fits comfortably in the pocket and doesn't move around too much. There is loads of room for other items (which I imagine could be textbooks and the like). It also fits comfortably on my back – I have a 20 minute walk to work so comfort is a necessity. I've only had it a few weeks so I can't really comment on the build quality, but the straps etc seem to be coping with the weight load just fine.
