This anthology takes a personal approach to introducing women's studies and feminism with a combination of analytical essays, first-person accounts, short stories and poetry. The selections explore the similarities and differences between women of diverse backgrounds and appreciate the various approaches women have used to survive and to change their lives and their world. A wide variety of topics are covered, including gender socialization, women's bodies, health care, sexuality, reproductive rights, the legal system, work, violence against women and ageing. Subjects are explored from the perspectives of women of diverse class, sexual orientation and racial backgrounds. The last two chapters of the book explore personal and social change including an examination of the history of feminism in the United States.
