Description

Two stunning interpretations. Borkman, a visionary banker and convicted embezzler, is obsessed with the power and glory of wealth. In The Wild Duck, Ibsen peels away fragile layers of the Ekdal family's world to reveal underlying tragedy. This version of John Gabriel Borkman was produced to great acclaim at the Royal National Theatre in 1997.

Author Biography

Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) has been described as 'the father of modern theatre'. Most of his early plays were traditional historical dramas. After 'Peer Gynt', a fairy-tale fantasy in verse, Ibsen wrote the rest of his plays in prose, and came to be regarded as the great Naturalist dramatist. Sir Peter Hall is one of the greatest theatre, film and opere directors of our time. At the age of 29 he founded the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1973 he became Director of the National Theatre and opened the new theatres on the South Bank. He later founded the Peter Hall Company, producing many West End and Broadway successes. He has directed at many international opera houses, including Glyndebourne, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Metropolitan opera and Bayreuth. To date he has directed over two hundred productions, including the world premiere in English of Samuel Beckett's Waiting or Godot, and the premieres of most of Harold Pinter's plays.
