To the press he is not responsible for anything in the present volume. Nor has the present editor had anything to guide him. He was not aware of the mind of the late Mr. Freeman, nor had he ever discussed with the late Mr. York Powell his intentions as to these volumes. Beyond some few detached sheets of the mss. Which he was able to recover from among Mr. York Powell's papers, he has only had the rough proofs from the press on which to work. In the notes and references Mr. Freeman had at times only indicated the source of the reference, and it has been the editor's careful endeavour to find the exact reference and to fill in the many side-references which Mr. Freeman had made to earlier chapters and to chapters which he had meant to write but never accomplished. When he undertook the task he did not realize how much of the little time he had to spare the work would demand, and he has done his best to make the notes and references as complete and accurate as possible.
