Description

Walden is one of the classic pieces of American literature. It concerns the account of how the author spent two years, two months and two days living a basic rural existence in a little hut by Walden pond and the thoughts and experiences that he had there. On the surface then it is a story about self sufficiency, but Henry Thoreau was heavily influenced by transcendentalism and the writing is heavy with parables and subtext. The time frame is compressed into a single year and the seasons break the book up into themed sections. This book is both a product of and an influence on many aspects of the famous American character, with the emphasis on individualism and natural living that calls to mind frontiersmanship. Rather than a simple description of a man's experiment in simple living it has become a book about philosophy, happiness, satisfaction and the best way to live.
