Planters want stock with a high potential for survival and growth. Satisfying this demand may tax nursery resources and require that quality seedlings be raised in large number on each available foot of nursery soil. Seedling size often is used as a measure of quality. Experience has shown that large pine seedlings from a given nursery generally survive better and grow faster than smaller ones from the same nursery. The nursery man's dilemma arises because, within reason able limits, only a given amount of vegetative material can be produced in any unit area.
