Excerpt from Uppingham School Roll: 1824 to 1894 IN introducing a new Edition of the uppingham school roll, the Editors would, in the first place, draw attention to the new matter embodied in it, which, it is hoped, will increase the value and interest of the work. This consists (i) of corrections and additions to the earlier edition; (2) of a continuation of the R011, and of the list of Assistant Masters, up to the end of the year 1893, besides the addition to the latter of a list of the Ushers under the old regime; (3) of the addition of the name of the boarding-house after each name, from the year 1874 onwards; (4) of appendices, containing lists of Entrance Scholars, Captains of School, Leaving Exhibitioners, Cricket Elevens, Football Fifteens, Shooting Eights, holders of the House Challenge Cups for Cricket, Football, Fives, and Champions in the Athletic Sports.
Secondly, the Editors wish to apologise for any omissions and mistakes, which are almost inevitable in a work where information has to be gathered from scattered sources, and where facts are peculiarly difficult to verify.
