"Wanted to hate it but just can't"

Being a diehard fan of the old X-Com games, when I heard there was a spiritual successor to them, naturally, I scoffed. Having been lent this game, however, I'm rather surprised to see that despite my bias against it, it actually impressed me. At first I really wasn't fond of the stylised look of the game in terms of how cartoony the characters looked, but as I played I realised how useful that sylisation is when you take into account the fact that you have a limited, non replenishable staff of soldiers, scientists and technicians, who can specialise very heavily. Being able to recognise their unique look and remember their specific skills is worth the price of the cartoony look, in my opinion.

I never would have tried the series by myself, especially since this one is the only game in the series without the infamous Starforce copy protection, but I'm glad I have. This is a real gem, and it does the X-Com series justice, even if we may never see the X-Com label on a videogame again for a very long time, if ever again.
