Much of the movement from country to city takes place within the confines of a single state; on the other hand, some of the interstate migration is merely from one border county or city to another just across the state line. Computations made in connec tion with the census of 1900 indicated that almost one half of the persons living outside of the state of birth lived in states adjoining the state of birth.
