Situated astride the continents of Asia and Europe, Ionia was a region of crucial importance throughout time. It was home to some of the most important cities of the ancient world, witnessed the unfolding of great historical events and was the birthplace of influential philosophical ideas. However, despite its great importance, it is often overlooked in many general historical surveys and this apparent lack of substantial and accessible publications when compared to other regions is at odds the huge popularity of archaeological sites such as Ephesos and the prominence of Ionian antiquities in the world’s great museums. Nevertheless, research into the region has increased greatly and the sheer range and diversity of debates, methods and data in The World of Ionia volume is a reflection of a subject area that is very much alive and flourishing and that continues to inspire international academic debate at a very highest level. With global contributors having divergent views and a plurality of approaches, the volume provides not a dull overview of the region but a lively debate and fresh perspectives on this important region of the ancient world.
