I deem it advisable in translation, to adhere to the letter of the original, where such adherence can be made not less poetical than a deviation from it though, in order to give fair play to the idioms of our language, it may often be desirable, to use terms which are equivalent rather than literal, and to alter the construction of sentences, or the position of words. I have laid down this rule for myself, never to give Virgil's Muse an ornament, which does not belong to her; but I have occasionally found it necessary, to expand the words of my Author, in order to convey his full meaning clearly to the English reader.
