Description

Excerpt from The Works of the Rev. John Witherspoon, D.D. L. L. D., Late President of the College at Princeton, New-Jersey, Vol. 3 of 4: To Which Is Prefixed an Account of the Author's Life, in a Sermon Occasioned by His Death My fubjee't does not oblige me to lay any thing upon the excellence and importance of the neglected truths, yet Iwill take this opportunity of delivering my Opinion in a few words. Thele doetrines I am perfuaded are not only true in themfelves, but the great foundation of all praelical religion. Xvherever they are maintained and inculcated, llrietnefs and purity of life and manners will be the1r natural eifeet. On the contrary, where they are neglected, and a pretended theory of moral virtue fublli tuted in their room, it will immediately and certainly in troduce a deluge of profanity and immorality in praetice. Of this the prefent [late of our own church and nat1on, compared with that offormer periods, is a fireng and me larncholy proof.
