Description

Excerpt from The Works of the Late Right Honorable Joseph Addison, Esq., Vol. 1 His next Itep in his fortune, Was to the pofi of Secretary under the late Mar'quefs of Wharton, Who was appointed lord-lieutenant of Ireland in the year 1709. As I have p'ropofed, to touch but very lightly on thofe parts of his life, which do not regard him as an Author, I {hall not enlarge upon the great reputation he acquired by his turn to' bufin'efs, and his unblemifhed integrity, in this and other employments. It muft not be omitted here, that the falary of Keeper of the Records in Ireland was confiderably railed, and that pol't beftowed upon him, at this time, as a mark of the Queen's favor. He was in that kingdom, when he 'firlt difcovered Sir Richard Steele to be Author of The Tatler, by an obfervation up on Virgil, which had been by him communicated to his friend. The affifiance he occafionally gave him afterwards in the fcourfe of the paper, did not ailittle contribute to advance its reputa tion; and, upon the change of the miniftry, he found leifure to engage more confiantly in that work, which however was dropt at laft, as it had been taken up, without his participation.
