Theengliah mindwussoahsolutelypractiulthatfins philosophy it needed something absurd in the highest degree, because it would at once pull to pieces every reasonable philosophy offered. 1 do not think this was quite a satis factory explanation, but must confess I know of no better; and if one thing is certain, it is that the chasm which everywhere in civilised Europe exists between theory and practice, and more especially between current social theories and the actual state of things, is felt nowhere less than in Great Britain. By intoxicating themselvm with phrases like altruism, charity, social justice, equality before the law, free dom and right to labour and happiness, the majority of English-speaking people do not feel that they live in a world in which these things are by no means self-evident or fundamental to society. It is an open question whether it would be better tor them, if the world of their fancy were alsothewurldofrcality; butthcreisnodoubtthatthe aluuistie ideals, everywhere on British soil, are spoken of and regarded as infinitely greata and lattice than the egotism which characterises everyone in the banners of actual life, andthatuonationislesinclincdwenterinwadiscussion ofthe question: are thae idals actuallyworthier ofhuman strivingthanthewishtogettheupperhandmthesoeial strugglebrexistence? Itis bynommnscertain thatideala, aimplyhecausetheyareideals, and are believedinbymany, must necessarily represent something better than reality does.
