Description

"I feel so intensely the delights of shutting oneself up in a little world of one's own, with pictures and music and everything beautiful." -Virginia Woolf, The Voyage Out (1915) The Voyage Out (1915), Virginia Woolf's first novel, is about Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose and their niece, Rachel, who travel by sea from London to a South American resort. It describes Rachel's journey of self-discovery from her sheltered life in London to freedom and discovery, which reflects Woolf's own journey from a repressed childhood to intellectual inspiration.

Author Biography:

VIRGINIA WOOLF née Stephen (1882-1941) was an English writer and one of the most important 20th-century authors who became famous for her nonlinear approach to writing. After having moved to Bloomsbury, a bohemian London district, in 1904, she formed the literary Bloomsbury Group with other writers, intellectuals, and artists. In the 1970s, Woolf's works received new attention for having inspired feminism. Among her best-known works are Mrs. Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), and A Room of One's Own (1929).
