It is impossible to doubt that many of the conclusions of Mr. Sharon Turner would have been modified, had these uniquely rich and comprehensive archives been accessible to him. Horace Walpole was too much occupied with the task of exposing fallacies to produce a constructive history, or to give a living distinctness to the portraiture of the King, whose character he has done so much to redeem alike from the slanders of prejudice and ignorance, and the mists of exaggeration and legend.
