Description

Excerpt from The Unpopular King, Vol. 1 of 2: The Life and Times of Richard III Tower, that the timbers which supported the roof of the room adjoining the chapel were, some of them, so decayed and snnl; by the weight of the records as to require immediate repair. In the Rolls Chapel these documents were deposited in presses round the walls, so constructed as not to excite the notice and divert the attention of worshippers. Every available place - not excepting the pulpit and the seats in the pews, which had been converted into boxes - was put in requisition for their storage. It is impossible to doubt that many of the conclusions of Mr. Sharon Turner would have been modified, had these uniquely rich and comprehensive archives been accessible to him. Horace Walpole was too much occupied with the task of exposing fallacies to produce a constructive history, or to give a living distinctness to the portraiture of the King, whose character he has done so much to redeem alike from the slanders of prejudice and ignorance, and the mists of exaggeration and legend.
