Description

Dixon Jr. (1864-1946) was a Southern Baptist minister, playwright, lecturer, North Carolina state legislator, lawyer and author. He is best known for his two early 20th-century novels The Leopard's Spots (1902), subtitled A Romance Of The White Man's Burden -1865-1900, and The Clansman (1905), which together with The Traitor (1907) form his Trilogy of Reconstruction. In these best-selling novels, which present highly imaginative fiction as hard historical fact, Dixon used historical romance to present Negroes as inferior to whites and to glorify the antebellum American South.
