Description

Excerpt from The Standard Cyclopedia of Modern Agriculture and Rural Economy, Vol. 6: Fis Hem The term sea trout' is somewhat ambiguous. The fish referred to above is that known to ichthyologists as Salmo trutta, which ought per haps to be called the salmon trout. But there is another fish known to Tweed fishermen as sea trout, and in other rivers called bull trout, namely Salmo cambrions or criaz, inferior to the true salmon trout in everything but size, for although the flesh is richly coloured it is coarse and insipid, and the fish seldom rises at the fly. It is undesirably abundant in the Tweed and other rivers of the east coast. The bull trout of the Tay are a distinct variety, growing to a great size, as much as 40 lb. In weight. In Wales the name 'sewin' is applied commonly to both salmon trout and bull trout, and farther south the term 'peel' is used to desi nate the grilse of salmon as well as all kin s of sea trout. The varieties of migratory trout merge into each other in a very perplexing way; in deed, Scandinavian ichthyologists have solved the difficulty by classifying salmon, sea trout, and freshwater trout as varieties of a single species. The important matter for anglers is that the presence of bull trout ought to be dis coura ed in every possible way, and all means should be taken to protect and increase that most sporting fish the salmon trout.
