Description

Excerpt from The Speeches of the Right Honourable Henry Grattan, in the Irish, and in the Imperial Parliament, Vol. 1 of 4 These volumes may serve as an Index to the His tory of Ireland. They explain the form of govern ment prior to the period of 1782, and the oppressive laws imposed upon the Irish people, and show by what measures their situation was altered and im proved; they set forth the condition of the Roman Catholic, and the progress made in repealing the laws by which he was aggrieved; they comprise the best period of the Irish nation, the rise and fall of her Independent Constitution. The speeches have been collected from the most authentic sources to which the Editor could procure access. Some of them never appeared in Mr. Grat tan's life-time, and many of them were revised or noted by him. The matter which it was thought ne cessary to connect with the several speeches, has been carefully selected but where the subjects are so numerous and various, errors may have inadvertently occurred. The list of the divisions on some important questions have been inserted, with a view to render justice to the -memory of honourable men, and to transmit to posterity the names of those who stood forward in defence of the Freedom and Constitution of their Country.
