Description

Excerpt from The Seven Deadly Sins of London: Drawn in Seven Several Coaches, Through the Seven Several Gates of the City; Bringing the Plague With Them The tract now reprinted marks a half-way stage, in subject as well as in date, between The Wonderfull Yeare 1603 and the most famous of Dekker's prose pieces, The Guls H om booke. The descriptions of the Plague in The Wonderfull Yeare have a command of anecdote which can hardly be expected at a distance from the event; there are ghastly things to be found in The Seven Deadly Sinnes, but they are not so thick-coming and absorbing, and their interest is one among many. The Guls Homebooke, on the other hand, has the sole object of ridiculing the extravagances of the man about town and the life of public places in 1609, and the task is joyously performed, with an unrivalled wealth of detail, In The Seven Deadly Sinnes Dekker had other game in View.
