Renan thought that his day was over, and his influence spent at the Reformation. Matthew Arnold declared that his day had not yet come, that the true Paul sleeps, but that one day there will be a resurrection, when his meaning will be apprehended, and happier generations will consent and applaud. Both critics, I venture to think, were wrong: Renan palpably so, as a matter of history; Arnold scarcely less so, as a matter of interpretation.
