Description

Excerpt from The Parliamentary History of the County of Oxford, Including the City and University of Oxford, and the Boroughs of Banbury, Burford, Chipping Norton, Dadington, Witney, and Woodstock, From the Earliest Times to the Present Day, 1213-1899: With Biographical and Genealogical Notices of the Members The most noted of the Oxfordshire elections was that of 1754, when each side is said to have expended J640000, upon the contest and petition which followed. The political opinions of the various Members during the eighteenth century are the result of the special researches of the Rev. A. B. Beavan, m.a., who has also very kindly revised the portion relating to Woodstock. Due mention must be made of the assistance derived from the various parochial histories, and from such standard works as the Dictionary of Nalional Biography, and the Alumni Oxonienses of Wood, and Fosz'er, and the Patent Rolls, Close Rolls, and Calendars of S late Papers.
