At this moment the doors of the jail room were opened (the outer one) and as all the inmates crowded to the bars to look at us, I turned to them and said, Men, this sight shows you what our enemies would do with every true Southerner if they could! But be not intimidated! Time will bring to all of us an opportunity! This speech was answered by murmurs of We'll re member, We'll see it out, etc., etc whereupon the Mongrels hurried us down the dark and dirty stairs.
