The children then know enough about reading to use a book to advantage, and a book serves to hold the class and the teacher to definite, well planned work. It will present the subject in the sequence that the experience of teachers (as set forth in the best courses of study) demands, and not according to the idiosyncrasies of the author. It will suggest at first a large amount of thoughtfully selected, interesting, somewhat information-giving oral work; but it must be recognized that no text-book can ever be expected to supply more than mere types of such work. As the child progresses, the written work will increase, and in the grammar grades it will largely predominate.
