Excerpt from The Negro in Pennsylvania: Slavery-Servitude-Freedom, 1639-1861 Effort has been made to consult all material bearing upon the subject, and many secondary works have been used. As a rule, however, lack of space has made it impossible to cite them, so that the several thousand ref erences are almost exclusively to sources. The prepara tion of this work has entailed a search through some printed volumes, more than pamphlets, and probably pages of manuscript. The work was written at the suggestion of Professor James Curtis Ballagh of the Johns Hopkins University, whose unrivalled knowledge of all things relating to the legal development of American slavery was at all times at my service. From Professor John Martin Vincent of the Johns Hopkins I had helpful and kindly guid ance, while for that sympathetic assistance and stimu lating criticism which mean so much to the beginner, I am indebted to Professor Charles mclean Andrews, now of Yale University.
