In the preceding chapters we have proved that neither the style nor the contents of the Koran can establish its claim to be the Word of God. We will now proceed to examine whether the personal character and conduct of Mohammed show him to have been a true prophet, or the contrary. At the commencement of this Part, we explained that one of the attributes of a true prophet is, that he should be able to work miracles and to foretell future events. But according to the Koran, Mohammed never at any time wrought a miracle. Thus in the Sura called " The Spider," it is written, "They say, ' Unless a sign be sent down unto him from his Lord we will not believe.' Answer, 'Signs are in the power of God alone; and I am no more than a public preacher.'" Again, in the Sura called "Night Journey," "And they say, 'We will by no means believe in thee, until thou "cause a spring of water to gush forth for us out of the earth, or "thou have a garden of palm-trees and vines, and thou cause rivers "to spring forth from the midst thereof with abundance; or thou "cause the heavens to fall down upon us, as thou hast given out, "in pieces; or thou bring down God and the angels to vouch for "thee; or thou have a house of gold; or thou ascend by a ladder "to heaven; neither will we believe thy ascending thither alone, "until thou cause a book to descend unto us, bearing witness of "thee, that we may read.' Answer: ' My Lord be praised! Am "I other than a man sent as an Apostle?'"
