Excerpt from The Merchants Club of Chicago: 1896-1907 The one outstanding principle of the Merchants Club that differed from and was an improvement upon the plan of its prototype was in the provision for continuing yo'uth. Its basic law decreed that no man who had reached the age of 45 years was eligible for election to membership, and when he reached 50 years he ceased automatically to be an active and became an associate member.
