"Soul-less disappointment.."
2 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I love the Matrix and don't think I was alone in my amazement at the trailer we saw for Matrix Reloaded with leather clad Trinity (Phwoar!!) plummetting out of a skyscraper in full “bullet time” mode.

So it amazed me that Matrix Reloaded was such a let down. The more glimpses we get into the world of the Matrix the more shallow the whole thing appears.

Showing Zion is a big blunder because it appears to be nothing more than an underground shanty town populated with Rastafarians and stuck up beaurocrats.

There are so many scenes that exist for no other reason than to be “wow” worthy (and are not even that). Neo fights dozens of Agent Smiths- why?! Just fly away!. There is a 4 minute long rave scene that grates beyond belief.

So 30 minutes into the movie the sinking feeling hits and nothing that happens afterward relieves it.

Reloaded becomes a mere parody of the original- pretentious, flat, lacking in likeable characters and it begs the question- why was the original so good? What did it have that this didn't? And then the realisation hits.. Guns.

Reloaded has no super slo-mo, ultra-cool gunfights. You know- like Blade did a full year before The Matrix's “revolutionary” bullet time. That's when the disappointment really hit me. This sequel somehow makes the original a lesser movie. Having said all that there are some scenes to admire. Anything with Monica Bellucci is good. The chase is good- not great, T3 and Bad Boys 2 both have better ones. The virtual climax the Meravingian triggers in the restaurant diner is funny. Other than that it is all a bit lifeless and as much as you feel you should be going “Oooh!” and “Aaah” at the all too few action scenes, you just can't muster 'em up.

Let's hope the Wachowskis ditch the philosophy and deliver a high-tech, nuts out action finale in Revolutions.

"Good but Not Great"
3 stars"

Although I enjoyed certain aspects of this movie I thought that overall it was decidedly average. To me it felt like watching (star wars) episode one – where the hype was huge but It failed to deliver in a number of areas. Although the action was excellent – nobody enjoyed the fight scene with neo and 100 agents more than me – the story dragged a bit and I felt that we were exposed to too much storyline at the end of the flick. And that whole Zion sequence was as unnessessary as it was awful with morpheus' speech just making me cringe. The question you have to ask yourself now is whether you buy this dvd on the strength of the last picture – just so you can say that you have all three when they are released. I am looking foward to revolutions but i know that “return of the king” is going to kick its ass anyway so its a bit of a dilemma.

Dont get me worng – its not nessessarily a bad movie but it definitely fails to be a great movie. Still I dont think that this fact will deter most people from buying it.

"Matrix fans will love it!"

Neo is still searching for the Truth. In the Matrix Reloaded we find Neo a changed man. He has evolved and adapted to the realities of The Matrix. No more just a freedom fighter, Neo must now be tested and pushed further than he ever imagined. Is he up to the test? Maybe. Maybe not. The question is, will he ever truly be free?

The Matrix Reloaded introduces a few new characters to the story as well as picking up from where we left off in The Matrix. A few things are uncovered for us, giving us the ability to piece together more pieces of the Puzzle that is Neo's existence. At the same time we see new threats and challenges for all of the Resistance to face. These are the elements of the first movie that shine through in the second.

At times I was left feeling like something wasn't gelling. The Special FX were everything I expected, but perhaps overkill at times. When I first saw The Matrix, I watched with anticipation and awe. When watching The Matrix Reloaded, it was more a feeling of ‘Okay I have seen this before .. but it's still pretty cool’. It wasnt so much a feeling of being disappointed, but more of a feeling of not being as excited as I was when The Matrix was first unleashed.

The one main thing that I enjoy more than anything in The Matrix movies are the characters and this definitely rings through for The Matrix Reloaded. I am glad to see that the Wachowski Brothers have out-done themselves in Reloaded giving what could have been just a flashy action movie, a little bit of depth.

Bottom line, see it if youre a fan, and if youre unsure, see it anyway. You may find yourselves being pleasantly surprised.
