Description

Excerpt from The Life of Frederick Denison Maurice, Vol. 1 of 2: Chiefly Told in His Own Letters MY father's autobiography has been received with such extreme kindness, that neither I nor my publishers were quite prepared to meet the sudden demand for it. The very large edition z 500 copies) which we had thought sufficient to strike off before breaking up the type, was disposed of in two months. Since the end of May we have not been able to meet the still urgent pressure for more. One cannot help casting back a reflection upon the astonish ment with which my father would have heard that any such effect was to be produced by his own words, the fulfilment though it is of his belief that, at some time or other, he would succeed in reaching simple and childlike people and be felt to be expressing their faith. In my father's behalf I may perhaps venture to offer my hearty thanks to those who, be longing to all classes, schools, and denominations, have helped to put simple people in communication with each other.
