For that reason I have dealt briefly with his life before 1638 and after 1647. Between those two dates he stands out as the Goliath of the Covenant. In 1639 and 1640 he appeared in arms for its establishment in Scotland. From 1644 to 1646 he fought for its extension to England. His career represents, therefore, Scotland's military activity against Charles, as Montrose's does her efforts on the King's behalf within the same period.
