The Godfather is not a perfect film… Nor is Pulp Fiction..... Nor The Dark
Knight..... So, why do they get 10s- Why was Bioshock so loved- Portal 1 and
2– Hell, way back to Ghosts and Goblins and Double Dragon… Space invaders…
Pong!- Were they perfect- And what would you score it- Hmmmmmm. At the time, and
be honest… Less than 10– If yes, I pity thee… Lol… What do people think
TLOU deserves- An 8 or a 9– Spare me, LOL!! Stop trying to be original and
sacrificing accuracy in the process. The job of a critic, even an amateur, is
surely to convey the game's comparable value to OTHER games, especially games
of a similar vein or genre. This isn't a good game… This is a moment in the
history of gaming. The convergence of a thousand talents where one overly false
note could have derailed the whole thing… And it didn't happen. There is a
difference between technical ‘perfection’ (though it still looks glorious
IMHO) and what occurs when you break boundaries and achieve a flawed masterpiece
that gets straight 10s still. But for EQUALLY fair reasons, albeit they differ.
Consider carefully too how a flaw or two (to big-picture-missing fuss-budgits)
is easily eaten up if the other areas SURPASS expectation. Furthermore, tell me
what this perfect game is- What's the perfect game you are comparing this too-
What appeases EVERY last person's DIFFERENT desires and does so with sheer
perfection across the board- What has ‘no boring bits’- I dunno what it is,
but it's already boring the crap outta me. Metal Gear Solid is far from
perfect, but it's a 10! You know it is… You remember… Same with GTA San
Andreas etc etc etc… Or does this crazy-ass spoilt younger-end of generation Y
think every game made should be utterly without anything that isn't 100%
un-attainably perfect in the eyes of everyone (a contradiction in terms)-
Yawwwwwwwwwwnnnnn… Go make your own games then you slobs! Lol… That there
are occasional, even frequent, progress by ladder to next level of environment
moments and the odd underwhelming moment is missing the point… This game does
things untried as well as this, it counter-punches its faults by being utterly
brilliant at anything and everything else, often things you hadn't believed
possible… Genuine fear, emotion, longing, friendship, affection, investment,
character development, genuine pay-off.. These are all here. You are LIVING…
In a strange, distopian future… Falling literally in love (paternally) with a
14 year old girl… Going from gentle pace to all out action… If it was all
out action ONLY you would have no tension, no meaning, no point… Were the best
Nirvana songs all noise- No. They had dynamics… They had twists and turns…
Lol, I guess you could use this weird example I have ended up on here as a
good parable too.. I.e. Nevermind is a 10/10 album, but it is NOT perfect by the
terminology used that results in anyone giving this a perfect score because it
appeals to everyone. If it did it would be utter bollocks… A thinned-out,
predictable, cliche-ridden pile of pooh. If you do not have highs and lows, if
you avoid contrasts and moral ambiguities that make some idiots go, “what!!-
A 10/10!--”… Then it probably isn't a 10/10 game (lol)… Those that see
sense in that ironic statement will love this game… Those after some perfect
version of something they have played before will find fault…and, might
I say, it is common for thoughtful games that ask you to pace yourself and
think at times and inject your own life skills and logic into their character,
to annoy those that do not have much to ‘offer’ their protagonist beyond a
button mash and like hand-holding… Or rage… Or blame the other characters
for ‘blocking your way’ (a common complaint in this game) – when this is
really due to you going one way and changing your mind as they pile through
behind you (LOL, you know it!!) or only annoys you as it results in a clicker
eating your face off… But that's just a reminder to be smarter… Think of it
as a ‘quirk’ whinge-monster. As above, perfection is attained via
imperfection and risks. One such risk in this game, and a justifiable reason for
its score, is that after 20 hours (yes, many say 12–13, but I look
everywhere and collect the stuff and take it in, that is how I roll… Lol),
when it ended, I laughed AND cried, and fist-pumped, and shook my head, and
wandered around the room in disbelief… And spoke about it days later… Why-
It is one of the coolest, darkest endings to any game, film or play… It was
perfect… Because it was not. Like this game.
When something straight blows your mind… And it will… How can you not
give it a 10/10– With all the utter drivel that is out there..... I frankly
think it needs an 11.
I have not played multiplayer… So, consider that a bonus. I don't know
when I'll play it again… But I'll always hold it dear. Like a great book –
this game is a classic. With a haunting character-affirming and equally
troubling one-liner in the penultimate scene that will go down in history as one
of the most awesome moments in the entire history of gaming.
