The houses are of the poorest description; all the inhabitants in a village form really one large family, being all connected by blood or marriage no stranger can settle among them. Many large villages have never seen a European face. Some few even manage to keep the Burmese tax-gatherer outside by sending their revenue to him. This life of freedom and independence is dearer to them than all the luxuries of the plains. The only domestic animals they have are fowls, dogs, and pigs dogs are eaten by the tai only.
