Description

Excerpt from The History of the Second Division, Vol. 2: 1916-1918 IN writing this History of the Second Division, I have been ex tremely fortunate in having access, not only to the official War Diaries, but also to private diaries kept by officers of the Division. I willingly, therefore, acknowledge the great assistance afforded me by the private diaries kept (from 1914 to 1918) by major-general Sir C. E. Pereira, and for the loan of maps and documents which have enabled me to follow accurately the opera tions of the Division; also the valuable help given me by Colonel C. P. Deedes, c.b., who (with General Pereira) has read the ms. Of the History, and has supplemented this assistance by the loan of maps and documents. To other officers also of the Division who were kind enough to lend me their private diaries I extend my grateful thanks. And lastly, but not least, I wish to acknowledge the courtesy and help afforded me at all times by the Director and Staff of the Historical Section (military Branch) of the Committee of Imperial Defence, without whose assistance it would at times have been almost impossible to unravel many of the intricacies which frequently confront an author of military histories.
