Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of Religion Within the Realm of Scotland: Containing, the Manner, and by What Persons, the Light of Christ's Gospel Has Been Manifested Unto This Realm, After That Horrible and Universal Defection From the Truth, Which Has Come by the Means of That Roman Antichrist As his godly fermons were lively and operative, fo his prophetical predie'tions were true and effec-i tual; an infiance whereof, in one remarkable particular, I thoughtzproper to fubjoin in this place, as follows: Upon the 221th of January 1 570 (which was the next day after the murder of the good regent the earl of Murray) John Knox being in the public preaching -place at Edinburgh, a certain paper, among the names of thefe who de fired the prayers of the church, was 'cunningly conveyed to his hand, whe1e1n we1e written thefe wo1ds, Take up the man whom you accounted anothe1 God.' He having privately read the fame without exprelling any fign of difpleafure, and bavin after lermon made a great moan for the lofs which the church and {late of Scotland had by the death of that virtuous nobleman, lhewing, that as God in his mercy giveth good and wife rulers, fo he taketh them away from a people in his wrath: At laft he thus vented, and uttered his mind There is one in this company, who maketh that horrible murder (whereat all good men have oef calion to be forry) the prime motive and fubjec't of his mirth. I tell him that he (hall die in a lirange land, where he {hall not have a friend near him to hold up his head.' Mr. Thomas Mait land, the author of the infulting f peeches, contained in the paper above f pecified (a youthful gentle man, b'earing fmall affee'tion to the good regent) having heard Jehn Knox's commination, com felfed the truth of what he had done to his filler the lady T rabrown but John Knox, faicl he, was raving to fpeak of he' knew not whom. His filler replied, with the tears in her eyes, that none of John Knox's threatnings fell to the ground without edee't. And fo it came to pafs in the pr dic'tion forefaid; for {hortly thereafter, the young gentleman, having gone beyond feas to trave died 111 Italy, while he was going to Rome, having no man to aflilt him, much lofs to lament him.
