Excerpt from The History of Scotland, During the Reigns of Queen Mary and of King James Vi, Until His Accession to the Crown of England, Vol. 2 of 2: With a Review of the Scottish History Previous to That Period; And an Appendix Containing Original Papers Immediately after the queen's imprisonment, the con federates were at the utmost pains to strengthen their party; they entered into new bonds of association; they assumed the title of lords of the secret council, and without any other right, arrogated to themselves the whole regal authority. One of their first acts of power was to search the city of Edinburgh for such as had been concerned in the murder of the king. This shew of zeal gained reputation to them selves, and threw an oblique reflection on the queen for her remissness. Several suspected persons'were seized. Capt. Blackadder and three others were condemned and executed. But no discovery of importance was made. If we believe some. Historians, they were convicted by sufficient evidence. If we give credit to others, their sentence was unjust, and they denied, with their last breath, any knowledge of the crime for which they sufferer.
