Description

Mary I (1516-58) was the Queen of England and Ireland from July 1553 until her death in November 1558. A devout Catholic, she is best known for attempting to reverse the English Reformation which had begun during the reign of her father, Henry VIII. The author of this biography, Jean Mary Stone (1853-1906), was an English historical writer educated in France and Germany who became a Roman Catholic convert whilst in Germany. On her return to England she was encouraged as an historian by Jesuit contacts and went on to write a number of books on Catholic subjects and was also a frequent contributor to periodicals such as Blackwood's Magazine and Cornhill Magazine, also contributing articles to the Catholic Encyclopedia. This work, first published in 1901, draws on public records, despatches of ambassadors in original private letters and other contemporary documents. With 10 full-page illustrations.
